Pike Onlinerigs logoLure Fishing-Floating Divers

Back

Floating, diving plugs or lures provide a degree of control over the depth the lure is fished and this helps the angler in overcoming the problem of uneven bottom, weed beds or other such snags.

Also it provides a more responsive action to the way you are fishing. Spoons and sinking lures always default to go to the bottom if you slow the retrieve too much and it is then vulnerable to snagging and being below the pikes line of sight, which is often low and due to the high set position on its head targetting it view to the brighter illuminated surface. It sees objects moving more easily against the light of the surface than it will an object moving parrallel or below itself.

The pike responds to the action and '
feel' of the lure, so the more disturbance and pressure wake it creates as it cuts through the water the more the pike has a target to focus on.

A floating diver responds to the speed and pressure of the retrieve to get it down to a particular depth, once there you can maintain the pressure and rate of retrieve to keep it there or increase or decrease it to make the lure run deeper or higher in the water. The secret is often to vary the retrieve speeds frequently to '
tempt' a strike, each cast and retrieve being varied to see if the pike will respond to a particular type and speed. Colours vary on these lures and you should carry several different colours to suit the time of day and clarity and depth of water being fished.

Make sure you always use a strong wire trace with a good strong quick change link swivel to allow you to change the lure pattern occasionally.
